If your baby is born in 2027, the names you'll hear at daycare and on the playground are the ones parents are choosing now. Here are the most popular baby girl names in the United States, from the Social Security Administration's count of babies born in 2025, how they have moved since 2024 and 2020, and all 1,000 girl names on SSA's list, from A to Z.

These are real counts, not a poll: SSA tallies the first names on Social Security card applications for babies born in the 50 states and DC. It publishes each year's names the following spring, so 2025 is the latest year; the list for babies born in 2026 is due in spring 2027.

Olivia was the most popular name for baby girls in 2025, given to 13,544 girls, and has been #1 every year since 2019, when she took over from Emma. But it was close: Charlotte, up from #4, came second with 13,400, only 144 behind. A year earlier, Olivia led the runner-up, Emma, by 1,248. She is still on top, but 1,228 fewer girls got her name than in 2024, the biggest drop of any girls' name.

One name left the top 10: Ava, who has slipped every year since 2020, from #3 to #11. Eliana took her place, up from #18 to #10 (#53 in 2020).

Here are the top 25 baby girl names of 2025, with the number of girls given each name and where it ranked in 2024 and 2020:

What the top 25 girl names mean

Here is the most widely accepted origin and meaning of each name; where scholars disagree, we say so.

  • Olivia: first used in this spelling by Shakespeare, for a character in Twelfth Night; probably from Latin oliva, “olive,” or from Oliver.
  • Charlotte: French feminine form of Charles, from a Germanic word meaning “free man.”
  • Emma: Germanic, from ermen, “whole, universal.”
  • Amelia: from the Germanic Amalia (from amal, “work”); it has long been mixed up with the Latin Emilia, a different name.
  • Sophia: Greek, “wisdom.”
  • Mia: Scandinavian, Dutch and German short form of Maria (Mary); it is also Italian for “my, mine.”
  • Isabella: Latinized form of Isabel, a medieval form of Elizabeth from southern France that spread to Spain and Portugal (see Elizabeth).
  • Evelyn: from an English surname that came from the Norman name Aveline; its earlier origin is uncertain.
  • Sofia: the spelling of Sophia in Spanish, Italian and many other languages; Greek, “wisdom.”
  • Eliana: from Hebrew, “my God has answered”; also a Latin name, from the Roman family name Aelius.
  • Ava: usually explained as a form of Eve (from Hebrew, “living”); there was also a medieval Germanic name Ava, of unknown meaning.
  • Eleanor: from Aliénor, the Old French form of an Occitan name borne by Eleanor of Aquitaine; its origin is uncertain, possibly “the other Aenor” (her mother’s name).
  • Violet: the flower, from Latin viola.
  • Ailany: a recent spelling of Ailani, whose origin is uncertain: possibly a rare Hawaiian name, ʻAilani, or the Spanish Aylín. The meaning “high chief” often given online isn’t backed by standard name dictionaries.
  • Aurora: Latin, “dawn”; the Roman goddess of the dawn.
  • Harper: from an English surname, “harp player.”
  • Elizabeth: from Hebrew Elisheva, “my God is an oath.”
  • Lily: the flower, from Latin lilium; also used as a pet form of Elizabeth.
  • Camila: Spanish and Portuguese form of Camilla, from the Roman family name Camillus, probably Etruscan and of unknown meaning; the link to Latin camillus, a boy who served at religious rites, is doubtful.
  • Nora: short form of Honora (from Latin honor, “honor”) and of Eleanor.
  • Hazel: the hazel tree, from Old English hæsel.
  • Penelope: Greek; the faithful wife of Odysseus in the Odyssey. Its origin is debated: possibly from pēnelops, a kind of duck, or pēnē, “thread.”
  • Chloe: Greek, “green shoot”; a title of the goddess Demeter.
  • Ellie: short form of Eleanor, Ellen or Elizabeth.
  • Lucy: English form of Lucia, from Latin lux, “light.”

Several of these names come from the Bible; see our biblical baby names for more.

How to use this list

  • Say the full name out loud, with your last name, and check what the initials spell.
  • Popular or rare? Olivia, the top name, went to 13,544 girls in 2025, so a name from the top 10 may well turn up again in your child's grade. Names near the end of the list were given to a couple hundred girls each. For rarer picks, see our unique baby girl names.
  • Check the other spellings. SSA counts each spelling as a separate name, so Sophia (#5) and Sofia (#9) are ranked apart. Counted together, they went to 20,813 girls in 2025, more than Olivia.
  • Decide together. If you and your partner don't agree yet, here's how to choose a baby name you'll both love.
