If your baby is born in 2027, the names you'll hear at daycare and on the playground are the ones parents are choosing now. Here are the most popular baby boy names in the United States, from the Social Security Administration's count of babies born in 2025, how they have moved since 2024 and 2020, and all 1,000 boy names on SSA's list, from A to Z.

These are real counts, not a poll: SSA tallies the first names on Social Security card applications for babies born in the 50 states and DC. It publishes each year's names the following spring, so 2025 is the latest year; the list for babies born in 2026 is due in spring 2027.

Liam was the most popular name for baby boys in 2025, given to 20,818 boys, and has been #1 every year since 2017, when he took over from Noah. Noah came second with 20,358, only 460 behind; a year earlier, the gap was 1,843. Liam is still on top, but 1,434 fewer boys got his name than in 2024, the biggest drop of any boys' name.

The top 10 are the same ten names as in 2024, in a slightly different order: Henry passed James, Elijah passed Mateo, and William passed Lucas.

What the top 25 boy names mean

Here is the most widely accepted origin and meaning of each name; where scholars disagree, we say so.

  • Liam: Irish short form of William (see William).
  • Noah: from Hebrew Noach, usually read as “rest” or “comfort.”
  • Oliver: from the Old French Olivier, usually linked to Latin oliva, “olive tree”; some trace it to a Germanic or Norse name instead, so the origin is debated.
  • Theodore: from Greek Theodoros, “gift of God.”
  • Henry: from the Germanic Heimirich, “ruler of the home.”
  • James: English form of the Latin Iacomus, a form of Jacob; from Hebrew Ya‘aqov, traditionally explained as “held by the heel” or “supplanter.”
  • Elijah: from Hebrew Eliyyahu, “my God is Yahweh.”
  • Mateo: Spanish form of Matthew; from Hebrew Mattityahu, “gift of God.”
  • William: from the Germanic Willahelm: wil, “will, desire,” and helm, “helmet, protection.”
  • Lucas: Latin form of the Greek Loukas, “man from Lucania,” a region of southern Italy; often linked to Latin lux, “light,” though that link is uncertain.
  • Benjamin: from Hebrew Binyamin, “son of the right hand” (also read as “son of the south”).
  • Levi: from Hebrew, “joined” or “attached.”
  • Elias: Greek form of Elijah, “my God is Yahweh.”
  • Luca: Italian form of Luke (see Lucas).
  • Jack: a medieval English pet form of John (see John).
  • Sebastian: from Latin Sebastianus, “from Sebaste,” a town whose name comes from Greek sebastos, “venerable.”
  • Hudson: from an English surname meaning “son of Hudde,” a medieval pet form of Hugh.
  • Samuel: from Hebrew Shemu’el, usually read as “name of God” or “God has heard.”
  • Leo: Latin, “lion.”
  • Ezra: from Hebrew, “help.”
  • Michael: from Hebrew Mikha’el, “who is like God?”
  • Daniel: from Hebrew, “God is my judge.”
  • John: from Hebrew Yochanan, “God is gracious.”
  • Ethan: from Hebrew Eitan, “firm, enduring.”
  • Julian: from Latin Julianus, from Julius, the Roman family name of Julius Caesar; where Julius itself comes from is uncertain.

Many of these names come from the Bible; see our biblical baby names for more.

How to use this list

  • Say the full name out loud, with your last name, and check what the initials spell.
  • Popular or rare? Liam, the top name, went to 20,818 boys in 2025, so a name from the top 10 may well turn up again in your child's grade. Names near the end of the list were given to a couple hundred boys each. For rarer picks, see our unique baby boy names.
  • Check the other spellings. SSA counts each spelling as a separate name, so Eithan (#97) is counted apart from Ethan (#24), and Luka (#85) apart from Luca (#14). A name can be more common than its rank suggests.
  • Decide together. If you and your partner don't agree yet, here's how to choose a baby name you'll both love.
