Preparing for Urinalysis
The night before your first doctor's appointment, avoid foods that can affect the urine — such as beets, carrots, blueberries [1]. And try not to use the bathroom right before you arrive at the doctor’s office.
When doing the test, allow the first stream of urine to pass before you collect a sample in the cup [2]. Urinalysis is used to to look for high levels of sugars, proteins, ketones, and bacteria which can indicate bladder or kidney infections, diabetes, dehydration, or preeclampsia.
